Socioeconomic factors outweigh climate in the regional difference of suicide death rate in Taiwan
Thu, 02 Sep 2010 09:53:52 +0100 | Psychiatry Research
Abstract: The present study explored both socioeconomic and climatic factors to obtain a more comprehensive view of the asymmetric regional suicide death rate during 1998–2006 in Taiwan. The annual suicide death rate, population and meteorological data from 19 cities/counties in Taiwan were analysed by multiple regression. Five socioeconomic (sex ratio, no spouse, aged, unemployment and low income) and three climatic (temperature, rainfall and sunshine) factors were identified as significant, explaining 59.0% of the variance in the total suicide death rate. ‘Without spouse’ and ‘aged’ were associated with the highest risk, while ‘low income with financial ----’ was strongly protective. The most influential climatic factor was ‘temperature,’ which was negatively correlated...

Interactive effects of nurse-experienced time pressure and burnout on patient safety: A cross-sectional survey
Wed, 01 Sep 2010 07:05:48 +0100 | International Journal of Nursing Studies
This study investigated how time pressure and the interaction of time pressure and nursing burnout affect patient safety.Design-setting participants: This cross-sectional study surveyed 458 nurses in 90 units of two medical centres in northern Taiwan. Methods: Nursing burnout was measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Scale. Patient safety was inversely measured by six items on frequency of adverse events. Time pressure was measured by five items. Regressions were used for the analysis. Results: While the results of regression analyses suggest that time pressure did not significantly affect patient safety (β=−.01, p>.05), time pressure and burnout had an interactive effect on patient safety (β=−.08, p (Source: International Journal of Nursing Studies)

The effectiveness of music in relieving pain in cancer patients: A randomized controlled trial
Wed, 01 Sep 2010 07:05:46 +0100 | International Journal of Nursing Studies
Abstract: Objectives: To examine effects of sedative music on cancer pain.Design: A randomized controlled trial.Settings: Two large medical centers in Kaoshiung City, in southern Taiwan.Participants: 126 hospitalized persons with cancer pain. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=62) or a control group (n=64), with computerized minimization, stratifying on gender, pain, and hospital unit. Music choices included folk songs, Buddhist hymns (Taiwanese music), plus harp, and piano (American). The experimental group listened to music for 30min; the control group rested in bed. Sensation and distress of pain were rated on 100mm VAS before and after the 30-min test. Results: Using MANCOVA, there was significantly less posttest pain in the music versus the control group,...

The effectiveness of intradialytic leg ergometry exercise for improving sedentary life style and fatigue among patients with chronic kidney disease: A randomized clinical trial
Wed, 01 Sep 2010 07:05:46 +0100 | International Journal of Nursing Studies
Abstract: Background: Over the past three decades, research has been carried out on the effects of exercise on chronic kidney disease patients for improving their physical potential. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of intradialytic leg ergometry exercise for improving fatigue and daily physical activity levels among chronic kidney disease patients.Design: A quasi-experimental clinical trial.Setting: Two hemodialysis units in a medical center in northern Taiwan.Method: The leg ergometry exercise was performed within the first hour of each hemodialysis session for 30min for 8 weeks. There were 36 subjects in the experimental group and 35 subjects in the control group who completed the study. Measurement on a fatigue scale and a physical activity log were done a...

Changes in Taiwanese nursing student values during the educational experience.
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | Nursing Ethics
This study examined changes in the professional values of nursing students between their entrance to and graduation from an undergraduate nursing program. A pre- and post-test design was employed. A convenience sample of 94 students from a university in Taiwan was surveyed. Data were collected from students during the sophomore and senior years. Total scores obtained for the revised Nurses Professional Values Scale during the senior year of the nursing program were significantly higher than upon program entry. The 'caring' subscale was scored highest at both program entry and graduation, but the pre- and post-test scores were not significantly different from each other. The students scored significantly higher on the 'professionalism' and 'activism' subscales at post-test than they did at ...

Mesothelioma-Causing Asbestos May be Banned in Taiwan
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 19:30:45 +0100 | Asbestos and Mesothelioma News
According to a news report, Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has plans to phase out the use of asbestos within the next decade. Lin Chien-hui, director of Taiwan’s EPA Department of Environmental Sanitation and Toxic Substance Management, said the ban on asbestos will be enforced in two stages. On July 1, 2015, regulations will be in place to make sure asbestos is no longer used as a sealing material in construction projects. On July 1, 2020, asbestos will be banned for all uses in tiles, linings and extruded cement panels. The plan to ban asbestos in Taiwan marks a big step towards lowering the incidence of asbestos-related disease. One of these conditions is malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. As with other a...

Validation of the medical outcomes study HIV (MOS-HIV) health survey among HIV-infected patients in Taiwan
Sat, 28 Aug 2010 17:05:54 +0100 | Quality of Life Research
Conclusions  The findings of the present study provide strong evidence in support of the reliability and validity of the MOS-HIV health survey for the assessment of quality of life among HIV-infected patients in Taiwan. We find that the original factor structure of the MOS-HIV survey remains valid for patients from Chinese cultural backgrounds. This study therefore contributes to the existing evidence within the extant literature on the cultural relevance of the MOS-HIV health survey (a measure originally developed within a Western culture) as a valid measure for cross-cultural comparative studies on health-related quality of life.
