Antioxidant Activities and Phytochemical Study of Leaf Extracts from 18 Indigenous Tree Species in Taiwan
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 18:35:24 +0100 | Advances in Pharmacological Sciences
The objective of this study is to assess antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from the leaves of 18 indigenous tree species in Taiwan. Results revealed that, among 18 species, Acer oliverianum exhibited the best free radical scavenging activities. The IC50 values were 5.8 and 11.8 μg/mL on DPPH radical and superoxide radical scavenging activities, respectively. In addition, A. oliverianum also exhibited the strongest ferrous ion chelating activity. Based on a bioactivity-guided isolation principle, the resulting methanolic crude extracts of A. oliverianum leaves were fractionated to yield soluble fractions of hexane, EtOAc, BuOH, and water. Of these, the EtOAc fraction had the best antioxidant activity. Furthermore, 8 specific phytochemicals were isolated and identif...
Risk of new acute myocardial infarction hospitalization associated with use of oral and parenteral non-steroidal anti-inflammation drugs (NSAIDs): a case-crossover study of Taiwan's National Health Insurance claims database and review of current evidence
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | BMC Cardiovascular Disorders
Conclusions:
The collective evidence revealed the tendency of increased AMI risk with current use of some NSAIDs. A higher AMI risk associated with use of parenteral NSAIDs was observed in the present study. Ketorolac had the highest associated risk in both oral and parenteral NSAIDs studied. Though further investigation to confirm the association is warranted, prescribing physicians and the general public should be cautious about the potential risk of AMI when using NSAIDs. Reducing the burden of morbidity and medical utilization of older patients by outpatient geriatric services: Implications to primary health‐care settings
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | Geriatrics and Gerontology International
Conclusion: Outpatient GEM could effectively reduce growth of BOM and medical utilization for relatively healthy elderly patients in Taiwan where elderly patients haverelatively free access to general and specialty care. The results of this study implied the potential benefits of systematically implementing GEM in primary health‐care settings to improve the quality of care and slow down the growth of BOM for elderly patients. The Association between Socioeconomic Status and Traditional Chinese Medicine Use among Children in Taiwan
Wed, 01 Feb 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | BMC Health Services Research
Conclusions:
Children and adolescents with high SES were more likely to use TCM and especially girls aged 10-18 years. Our findings point to the high use of complementary and alternative medicine among children and adolescents. (Source: BMC Health Services Research)
Somatic neuropathy is an independent predictor of all‐ and diabetes‐related mortality in type 2 diabetic patients: a population‐based 5‐year follow‐up study (KCIS No. 29)
Wed, 01 Feb 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | European Journal of Neurology
Conclusions: Diabetic polyneuropathy was an independent predictor for all‐cause and diabetes‐related mortality. The presence of neuropathy together with other significant prognostic factors is informative to predict all‐cause death and death from diabetes‐related disease for patients diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Pharmaceutical And Medical Device Market Access In Key Asian Markets Conference, 3-4 May 2012, Bangkok, Thailand
Tue, 31 Jan 2012 08:00:00 +0100 | Health News from Medical News Today
Asian markets are increasingly the focus of pharmaceutical companies who are looking for new market opportunities beyond the traditional "rich-world" countries who are facing economic stagnation. Traditionally, more "mature" and higher income Asian markets such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong have been seen as the priority of pharma marketers, but now fast-developing, high-population countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, are increasingly the priority... Chryseobacterium indologenes subcutaneous port‐related bacteremia in a liver transplant patient
Sun, 29 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | Transplant Infectious Disease
We report the first case, to our knowledge, of C. indologenes subcutaneous port‐related bacteremia in a liver transplant recipient. The isolates were resistant to antibiotics previously reported as active, and device removal was required for treatment success. (Source: Transplant Infectious Disease)
